Manual
Requirements
Overview and quick start
Markdown is processed locally in your browser. Use a current JavaScript-enabled browser; no account is needed. Open your own UTF-8 file or start with the new document. Edit the source, inspect the live preview and download the result. The preview supports headings, lists, tables, footnotes, mathematics and Mermaid diagrams.
Result
Open and download files
Open Markdown reads a local .md or .markdown file. Cancelling the file picker leaves the document unchanged. Opening another file replaces the current content: download unsaved changes first. An unreadable file displays an error and preserves the previous content.
Download Markdown or Ctrl+S downloads the source using the opened filename; a new document is called document.md. The original file is not overwritten. Your browser controls the download directory and prompts. “Saved” confirms that a download was requested; inspect the browser download list if downloads are blocked. This web view does not export complete documents as PDF, HTML or Word.
Steps
Source, formatting toolbar and commands
Select text and choose Bold, Italic, Strikethrough or Inline-Code. Without a selection an editable template is inserted. Paragraph format selects a paragraph or heading levels 1–6. Bullet lists, numbered lists, task lists, quotes and horizontal rules insert Markdown syntax. Insert link inserts a template: replace its address and text. Insert image inserts an image reference in the browser. Insert table creates an editable table. Insert code block selects a language; mermaid activates diagram rendering. Enclose mathematics in $…$ inline or a block between $$.
Undo and Redo control editor history. The tools switch hides and restores the formatting toolbar. Editor commands provide find, replace and go to line. The command palette filters actions by name. Example: type ## Tasks, followed by - [ ] Review text. Select “Review text”, choose Bold, inspect the preview and download the file.
Parameters
Preview, images and diagrams
Markdown only enlarges the source pane. Markdown and preview shows both panes. Drag the separator to resize them. The link switch controls synchronized scrolling. Clicking preview text takes you to its source position.
Image references remain in the source. External images are not loaded automatically; desktop repository images are unavailable. The web version currently does not display local or embedded image files. Edit alternative text and image references in the source; repository image properties belong to the desktop version. Code blocks provide copying. Diagrams load when needed; their view offers source switching, zoom in, zoom out, actual size and fullscreen. Correct the Mermaid source when a diagram fails. The rest of the document remains editable.
Keyboard and help
Tab and Shift+Tab move between controls; Enter or Space activates a focused button. Editor shortcuts: Ctrl+B bold, Ctrl+I italic, Ctrl+Shift+X strikethrough, Ctrl+Z undo, Ctrl+Y redo, Ctrl+S download and Ctrl+F find. Editor commands use Command on macOS. Escape closes editor search fields or dialogs. Help opens this manual. F1 opens the section for the focused tool area.
Settings, storage and privacy
Text and filename are saved locally in this browser after each edit or file import and restored when you reopen the editor. An empty document stays empty. The detailed Markdown guide appears only on the first visit without a saved document. Icon buttons at the start of the editor toolbar open and download files. Storage errors are shown; downloads remain available. Clearing browser data removes the draft. Opening another file replaces it. Download important documents as a separate backup.
The editor does not send Markdown content to a server. Deliberately following an external link leaves the Toolbox. The global storage and privacy pages describe the rest of the website.
Troubleshooting
Errors, limits and browser behaviour
Check permissions and UTF-8 encoding when a file cannot be read. Inspect the download list and browser permissions for missing downloads. Large documents, tables, equations and diagrams need more memory and processing time; use Markdown only if editing becomes slow. The browser cannot access the desktop content repository and does not automatically write changes back to the original file.
Common errors
Invalid diagrams or unsupported image sources cannot be rendered. Their references remain in the source. An unreadable file does not replace existing content.
